The Gospel of today’s Eucharist concisely narrates Christ’s calling of St. Matthew. I cannot read it without “seeing” Caravaggio’s magnificent depiction of the scene in Rome’s church of San Luigi dei Francesi. When teaching, I encourage my students not to restrict theology to the prevalent conceptual mode, but to see it in painting and hear it in music.I would be interested in learning what different viewers “see.”
