The convergence of Jewish and Muslim holy days with the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attack makes this a solemn time. People will encounter this in many ways. For me, it's been in the funereal bells sounded this morning at St. Columba Church, timed to the moments when aircraft struck the World Trade Center towers. In the smile of the Pakistani attendant at the local Getty station on being wished a happy Eid. In seeing Orthodox Jews' dignified walks this week to the synagogue to celebrate the start of High Holy Days."The calendar confluence seems designed to offer an opportunity for hope, for re-aligning priorities, for soul-searching and commitment," John Borelli, an author and expert on inter-religious relations who is assistant to the president of Georgetown University, writes on CNN.com. He hits the right tone for the day.
