A few new developments on the Donohue vs. Edwards front. First, Commonweal columnist Melinda Henneberger picked up Eduardo's post below over at the Huffington Post. Second, the New York Times published a follow-up story, which made no mention of the offended who are not on the Right. Third and finally, the Politico ran a story this morning filling in the gap in the Times article, which features more commentary from Eduardo.

I mentioned this in the comment boxes to his post, but this is Donohue's response to Edwards's refusal to fire his bloggers:

Mr. Donohue said today that he was stunned to learn that Mr. Edwards was keeping them on his payroll.

The bloggers are no longer the issue. Edwards is the issue, Mr.Donohue said in an interview. Were going to shadow this guy. This isgoing to kill his campaign. This is the biggest mistake hes ever made.

That's a threat, and maybe not too frightening to those who have followed Donohue's tenure as president of the Catholic League--it's entirely in keeping with his pugilistic style. (And it's worth noting that the blogger McEwan said nothing anti-Catholic, as far as I can tell; sure, she went after "religious conservatives" and criticized the pope, but that's not anti-Catholic. It's anti-Bill Donohue. Maybe that's enough for him.) But what happened to "John Edwards is a decent man"? In just two days, Donohue came back around to his culture-war rhetoric--read the whole press release. It's a fantastic piece of bombast and a shining example of non sequitur.

Bill D.: Edwards said today that Were beginning a great debate about the future of our country, and we cant let it be hijacked. I have news for himthe Catholic Leaguenot Edwardswill decide what the debate will be about, and it wont be about the nation."
