The vigorous denials by officials that the United States assassinated or helped assassinate Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan in Teheran on Wednesday has left Israel and/or the terrorist group MEK planting the magnetic bomb. For those who either don't think Israel would assassinate civilians, or for those who think the U.S. is in the game with Israel, here is a well-sourced story to contemplate. In the last years of the George W. Bush administration, Israel's intelligence service Mossad claiming to be CIA, paid Jundallah, a Pakistani-based, Sunni, anti-Iranian terrorist group to assassinate Iranian officials and civilians. Bush is said to have gone "ballistic"; the CIA denied involvement and seems to have evidence to prove it. Whether or not the CIA was complicit in these terrorist acts or in the assassination of Iranian scientists, Israel's strategy here seems to be to draw the U.S. ever deeper into its efforts to bring down Iran and to make sure U.S. fingerprints are on the weapons. In addiiton, Netanyahu's government would like to derail any U.N./U.S.-Iranian negotiations over nuclear materials. The report, "False Flag," is in Foreign Policy.HT: Juan Cole. Cole reminds us that Israeli agents mounted another such "false flag" operation in Dubai when it assassinated Mahmoud al-Mabhouh of Hamas having stolen the identities and used the passports of citizens of the U.K., Australia, and Germany as cover for Mossad agents. Israel denies the Mossad-CIA story: HaaretzUPDATE. And more from Haaretz: "Western intelligence sources told Time magazine on Friday that Israel's Mossad is responsible for the latest assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist." Hmmm! Western? Costa Rica?
