Why, Grant, did you post it?

I see it is back now.

MIght it be that the reason Assad seems to be willing to deal is that he is actually afraid of the influence and power of the foreign radical groups such as Al Quaeda in his own country?  Are *they* starting to threaten his power?  And what about their power in the other M. E. countries?  Are the leaders of the other M.E. countries also becoming afraid of their influence?  See especially Egypt.  

Are they in the M. E. similar  the Marxists/Socialists  in Europe in the second part of the 19th century -- loosely affiliated, inter-state groups with a powerful common impetus to change the wider culture  radically?
