Founded in 1924, Commonweal is the oldest Catholic journal of its kind in the United States. Independent and lay-led, Commonweal is a bridge between the intellectual and active lives of lay Catholics who seek meaning and justice, inspiring people in their hopes for a more inclusive future for our church, politics, and culture.
Commonweal is supported by a dedicated full-time staff of fourteen, including senior leadership in publishing, editorial, marketing, and business operations. It is governed by a twenty-three-member Board of Directors responsible for guiding the organization’s long-term vision and sustainability. Commonweal is proudly independent and unaffiliated with the institutional Church.
