“Make known to me, Lord, the way on which I should walk (Ps 142[143]:8). This is why he lit the light of the prophets; this is why he sent his Son in the candle pot of his flesh, who himself would say, “My strength is dried up like a clay pot” (Ps 21[22]:16). Walk toward the prophecy; walk toward the lamp of the things predicted; walk toward the words of God. You don’t yet see the Word who was “in the beginning, God with God” (Jn 1:1). Walk, then, toward the form of the servant and you will be led to the form of the Lord. “Make known to me, Lord, the way on which I should walk, for to you I have lifted up my soul.” I lift it up to you, not against you. “With you is the fountain of life” (Ps 35[36]:10). “To you I have lifted up my soul,” as if I have brought a vessel to a fountain. Fill me, then, because “to you I have lifted up my soul.” (EnPs 142 [143]m 15; PL 37, 1854-55)
