Thanksgiving was frozen and gray.

Three thousand dollars and change

were donated at our Masses,

and our pastor was moved to arrange

a gift for Dorothy Day,

a thousand three-dollar dinners

for the battered, the drunkards, the sinners.

She cares for each person who passes

addicted, alone or astray,

and ours are the souls she would save

as we try to rise out of the grave.
