Quote of the Day: Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio

"I have the impression that Jesus was locked inside the Church and that he is knocking because he wants to get out."

-- Cardinal Bergoglio to his fellow cardinals a few days before they elected him Pope Francis last March. He was quoted by French Cardinal Philippe Barbarin in an interview (in Italian) with Paolo Rodari of the Italian daily La Repubblica.

"O Jesus, Thou art standing, outside the fast closed door,
In lowly patience waiting to pass the threshold o’er:
Shame on us, Christian brothers, His Name and sign who bear,
O shame, thrice shame upon us, to keep Him standing there!"

(from an unfortunately droopy Victorian hymn which I remember from my youth; perhaps we should revive it, changing "outside" to "inside").

I just updated the translation to say, I think more accurately, "Jesus was locked inside the Church..." Not "is locked inside..." More intriguing -- points to a whodunnit. Cardinal Mustard in the Library with a Bull?

More intriguing -- points to a whodunnit

I would think the answer isn't "the other faction", but rather "the factions".

Did you get this off of them spy networks?

Jesus being locked inside the church: Vatican II's *throwing open the windows* comes to mind.  Too bad they didn't remain open.
