The next big thing

The Borowitz Report used to be a chuckle in the e-mail. Now its creator has gone big at the New Yorker. Thought I'd share his latest: "U.S. Promises Smooth Transfer to Quagmire from Afghanistan to Syria."  Chuckle! Chuckle!

The fact-checkers at the New Yorker, famous though they may be, obviously missed a quote attribution. The head of the Joint Chiefs, General Martin Dempsey, is quoted saying something that was no doubt uttered by Secretary of State John Kerry. Chuckle! Chuckle!

I think Alex Parene put it nicely, regarding Borowitz:

To Borowitz’s credit, he’s not quite Jay Leno.

Ouch...

Seriously, Borowitz--while not the worst--is pretty awful. It's as though the Universal Dad decided to write satire when it's too wet out to play golf.

More awful than Maureen Dowd?

I had a good friend who had studied the Art of War and was of Chinese descent and hardly a liberal! When the US first invaded Afghanistan he said that the Taliban and extremists had one weapon that the Americans lack. Patience!

Sure enough, some 12 years later, the US is sitting down with the Taliban to negotiate an exit strategy.

Not just Patience! They have Chutzpah...advertizing themselves in Doha as the legitimate government of Afghanistan, flag et al. You have to wonder if anyone at the State Department would have noticed if President Karzai hadn't complained.

If she had a dedicated column ostensibly of the genre of satire, then probably not. But that's a hypothetical.
