Positions Available - Commonweal Magazine

SENIOR EDITOR

(posted 1/10/11)

Commonweal Magazine, the distinguished independent journal of opinion edited and managed by lay Catholics, is seeking a Senior Editor to play a significant role in helping to shape the magazine and its Web site. Reporting to Commonweal’s editor, Paul Baumann, the Senior Editor will take a leadership role in helping to plan future issues, commissioning articles, working with key writers, and ensuring the continued high quality of the magazine’s writing and appearance.

The position requires a demonstrated familiarity with the religious, political, and cultural questions and debates that make up Commonweal’s editorial focus, as well as existing contacts and relationships in the theological, political, literary, and academic worlds from which Commonweal draws its contributors. Exceptional hands-on editing and rewrite skills are necessary. Experience in journalism or publishing is welcome, but we also encourage applications from strong candidates meeting the job requirements who have academic or other professional backgrounds.

The position is full time, although the Commonweal office operates on a four-day work week. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Commonweal is operated by a not-for-profit foundation independent of church affiliation, with a board of directors which takes responsibility for the magazine’s fiscal health and editorial independence.

Resume and cover letter should be sent via e-mail (only) to Thomas Baker, Publisher, at jobs@commonwealmagazine.org.

Commonweal is an equal opportunity employer.
