Name that Paper
Terry Mattingly over at Get Religion has put together a little contest. See if you can guess which of the following headline/lede combinations about the new Pew Forum poll came from the New York Times and which came from the Washington Times:
Headline: Few see Democrats as friendly to religion
Liberal or progressive Christians, who make up 34 percent of the population, are disunified on key issues, and only one out of four Americans considers the Democratic Party friendly to religion, a Pew poll shows.
Headline: In Poll, G.O.P. Slips as a Friend of Religion
A new poll shows that fewer Americans view the Republican Party as “friendly to religion” than a year ago, with the decline particularly steep among Catholics and white evangelical Protestants — constituencies at the core of the Republicans’ conservative Christian voting bloc.
Three guesses and the first two don’t count. Then go read Terry’s analysis of the new poll, which links to other points of view as well. By the way, for those interested in the “religion beat,” Get Religion is a must-read blog.

Excellent analysis on GetReligion. As Mattingly points out, liberal and moderate opposition to abortion seldom translates into real votes–and therefore seems to have little impact on politicians’ behavior. At the behest of a friend, I joined Dems for Life a while back, but I find few actual Dems on the ballot that I could support. The only thing I can imagine that would change the Democrats’ political behavior is continued loss to conservatives.
