NYT on Dolan

Interesting article. But wouldn’t the Latin invoked by John Allen be “ad extra” and “ad intra”? Or maybe he meant ad astra, given the celebrities in New York City. That would be quite a change in mission!

Great question! There is a Latin adjective exter, -a, -um, so ad extera is Latin. The version ad estera sounds like an Italianate mispronunciation of ex followed by a consonant. The Oxford Latin Dictionary does not give as corresponding adjective inter, -a, -um but one could have been formed by analogy! Certainly ad intra, ad extra are possible but I think a little less like what Allen was quoted as saying. But then…
Have a good friend who respects and journeys with Dolan. This is an “interesting” article – actually, he has my prayers – finances will push him to make some difficult decisions; at the same time; he has changed the catholic community by his personality, enthusiasm, and pastoral skills – but he will face future challenges.
There is one area that still creates confusion for me…..given that most bishops fall into this category, guess we could excuse it as his learning curve. But, would love to see the “american pope per John Allen” step out on a limb; invite VOTF, SNAP participation in the archdiocese, and address this track record: http://www.bishop-accountability.org/news2009/01_02/2009_02_18_Isely_ArchbishopDolans.htm
“In the Catholic world, we use Latin terms to describe the two types of bishop,” Mr. Allen said. “There is the ‘ad estera,’ who is the outward-looking, evangelizing preacher. And the ‘ad intera,’ the inward-tending bishop who likes to move the levers of power.”
Whether he’s conscious of it or not, Abp. Dolan’s whirlwind style is also “ad vertisement.”
“O villain, villain, smiling, damned villain!
My tables,–meet it is I set it down,
That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain;
At least I’m sure it may be so in Denmark:”
Dolan is a welcome sight after the dour Egan. But it takes more than smiles. And the smile that deceives or is not transparent may be most villanous. At least I’m sure it may be so in New York.
Bill deHaas wrote that he “would love to see the “american pope per John Allen” step out on a limb; invite VOTF, SNAP participation in the archdiocese. . . . ”
The Tablet ran an article recently on what was essentially a service of penance in St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, led by Cardinal Schönborn, in company with We Are Church (Wir sind Kirche) which, tho an international movement now, was born in Austria out of the sexual abuse scandal surrounding Vienna’s Cardinal Groer, and seems to be, roughly, the Austrian equivalent of VOTF. In fact, I think We Are Church actually organized the service, invited Schönborn to join them, and were pleasantly surprised when he accepted.
Can you imagine any American bishop — or even more amazing, any American cardinal — showing the kind of courage that would make such a gathering possible?
PS This is neither here nor there, but archdiocese of Vienna runs a terrific radio station — Radio Stephansdom — which you can easily stream on your computer, and which plays wonderful music, including complete operas on Tues, Thurs, and Sat afternoons. But then I can’t be jealous, because in this country we are blessed with EWTN.
This strikes me as a peace offering from the Times.
Why does Dolan stir the pot so vehemently about anti-media bias, if not to demagogue on a history for his own purposes? His Good Friday homily was offensive. His earlier letter about coverage of sexual abuse in Judaism was a disgrace, filled with factual error.
Blame the NYTimes is his punch line. His meta message: see what media I can generate against you if you dare offend me. Bishops from everywhere will attack you, and loyal Catholics will follow in droves.
Not impressed.
I think Carolyn has a point – I thought the artcle was a little “kissy-poo.”
A sop to the offended Abp?
What’s significant is that there’s been no adminiostrative change in the new regime. That may say more than all the smiles, laughter and glad handing.
“But then I can’t be jealous, because in this country we are blessed with EWTN.”
Oooooooooo.
Looks like they posted a correction agreeing with you Cathy.
I know Dolan likes to talk about his love for food and brew. But if he continues to eat like he is he may be remembered as the heaviest, no pun intended, archbishop of New York. http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=324241018074&comments&ref=mf
Will the heaviest also be remember as a lightweight? Time will surely tell.
