The Commonweal Internship Program.

Posted by

Commonweal is establishing a new
internship program that will provide promising young Catholic scholars, writers,
journalists and critics with real-world experience in opinion journalism as well
as stimulating opportunities to meet and work with potential mentors and
teachers in academia, journalism, church affairs and public life.

Interns will participate in the day-to-day life of the
magazine and assist editors with research and other projects. They will also
participate in informal seminars several times each semester.

In the 2007-08 academic year, we will invite up to two
interns each semester to spend a minimum of one full day a week at the magazine,
in addition to occasional seminars and writing projects. (We expect that
academic-year participants will already reside in or near New York City.) In the
summer of 2008, we will offer a three-week internship program, with daily
involvement at the magazine. Very modest stipends are offered to help defray
transportation and living expenses.

The program is open to current undergraduate and graduate
students in any discipline, as well as those who have completed degree programs
within the past two years. We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate
both active engagement with the intellectual life of the Catholic Church and a significant commitment to journalism and writing.

Applicants should send a letter describing their interest
in the program, and detailing their academic and writing qualifications
(including writing samples if relevant), via e-mail
only
to interns@commonwealmagazine.org.
The application deadline for Fall 2007 interns is April 13,
2007
.
