  1. Latin is doing all right at Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City where I am the sole classicist. The enrollment for my elementary Latin class has been high (as has that for classical Greek). Students are also interested in studying classical civiilization more generally, as attested by slowly growing attendence in classes in Roman law and politics and classical civilization suggest.

    Vivat lingua Latina!

  2. Reggie is know to exaggerate for effect.
I still like the idea of the Pope doing a Latin tutorial in the afternoons, though!

  3. I’m curious as to what others may have experienced, but I have yet to meet an American priest under the age fifty who has any knowledge of Latin. This includes some quite well rounded and well read men. Some of the priests from foreign countries I have known (particularly in Latin America) do seem to know some Latin.

    Have others had different experiences?

  4. The Telegraph has long been friendly to classical interests and Latin in particular. If I remember rightly, Philip Howard writes for the Telegraph and is also active in the Friends of Classics group in the U.K. The name Peter Jones also come to mind. I don’t know of any comparable group in the U.S.

I do hope Reggie Foster is exaggerating! Perhaps he is judging by the clergy in the U.S.

  5. I know a few priests, under fifty, who know Latin well. A few of them were in Reggie’s summer course in Rome with me.
