This is well worth reading, in my view.

  1. Rocco Palmo raises an interesting question. Should a bishop or a group of bishops take a position an a particular proposal to raise the minimum wage? Whether to raise it, when, how often, by how much–are these not questions best left to politicians? Or better still, left to all of us? Surely a bishop can advocate justice, including a just wage, but is a bishop, qua bishop, entitled to speak with authority on such a subject at a level of particularity such as would be implied in the suppport of an actual proposal to raise the minimum by x dollars. A parallel argument can be made about other issues, going to war, or not going to war. Perhaps that is why the bishops tend to stick to what they take to be moral questions of an unambiguous sort, most leading to statements in the form of “stop!” or “don’t!”
