Rowan Williams on Vatican Radio

Here you may listen to an interview with Rowan Williams that was broadcast on Vatican Radio.  I’ve been looking for a copy of Cardinal Kasper’s speech at the symposium at which both men spoke.  I have only the report made by CNA. I hope Kasper’s remarks will soon be made available.

  1. I believe it was published in “L’Osservatore Romano” of November 20th. But linking it is supra capacitatem meam!

  2. I wonder about Kasper’s words. If Roman Catholics converted to Anglicanism would he have stated that this was the natural fruit of ecumenism? Rowan made his point to Benedict after Kasper’s speech. Kasper sounded more like Benedict on this one. Seems surprising. But…

  3. Kasper speaks warmly of Catholics who become Anglicans and says we must respect their conscientious decision.

Kasper nodded and smiled while Rowan Williams was speaking.

Catholics here in Japan and Anglican friends in Oxford are very enthused by Dr Williams lecture at the Greg. His statement was bedrock common sense, theologically impeccable, and deeply evangelical. It may turn out to be a more important event than that Anglicanorum Coetibus business.

  4. Father O’Leary,

I would not read overly much into Kasper’s smile. It may be only “cortesia alla Romana” — al dente!

  5. “cortesia alla Romana” — al dente!” In verita!

In January 1988 the outstanding Protestant theologian Harvey Cox asked to meet Ratzinger as he was in Rome for a visit. The then Prefect arranged to meet Cox at 1PM. Cox wondered whether this meant lunch but was told in Rome this does not mean lunch. But if the person is enjoying the conversation he will invite you to lunch. Ratzinger arranged to have someone call him after 45 minutes and used that to not to option to have lunch with Cox.

    Romanita!
