Deadwood Update

Okay, I’m almost through the first season of Deadwood. I have to admit, Grant was right. I’ve gotten hooked (well, apart from the part where they killed the teenage thieves, for which I had to leave the room –and . . . those pigs. . . )
But the dialogue is very, very good. And Al is beginning to grow on me.
The most incongruous thing. . . those actors have really, really white teeth–which look startling and anachronistic against their dirty faces.

Ah! the wonders of modern dentistry!
I saw episode 10 last night –Mr. Wu. The piece of practical reasoning –perverse and racist but accurate in cost/benefit analysis –where Al ponders aloud whether to kill the junkies who killed and stole Mr. Wu’s shipment of opium (weighing race, politics, alternative opium supply, other business interests, likelihood of being killed themselves for killing a white man as punishment for killing a Chinese man) was utterly bankrupt and utterly riveting–at the same time.
My colleague Rick Garnett has long waxed eloquently in praise of Deadwood’s quality around ND. He was right.
It only gets better, Cathy. The Season 3 DVDs can’t get here fast enough.
