No time to blog right now but I thought I would link to this new essay in The New Republic by David Nirenberg about Pope Benedict’s Caritas in Veritate.  Enjoy.

  1. Hmm. Seems we’re back to searching for principles of natural law (i.e., universal requirements/laws necessary for all human beings to flourish). The problem, especially in democracies, seems to be that universality seems to imply at least some uniformity. Does it? If so, in how much detail?

  2. I never thought I would ever agree with anything I read in The New Republic but that item by David Nirenberg hit the nail on the head. The linking of every hope for the world to an acceptance of “MY Truth” has been the dreary and triumphalist whinge (it is close to “whine” with an added touch of self-pity) of every pontiff of the modern age.

Love liberated from any creature’s idea of the truth is the answer. Surely Matthew 25 is fairly straightforward and understandable. Naive? Well yes, if we expect tangible results by the end of Obama’s second term …
