Here are some photos I took of Niccolo dell’Arca’s “Compianto di Cristo.” I forgot to mention in my earlier post that they were done in terracotta, and painted.





At least in the case of marble ancient Greek statuary seems generally to have been painted, probably terra cotta too; and nobody would add a patina to a bronze statue. How taste changed!
A truly powerful and touching work. Remarkable how well it captures so many different facets of grief and loss. Haunting, really.
