Thomas Jefferson’s ice cream

Posted by Paul Lauritzen

The hostess at a dinner my wife and I attended yesterday suggested that everybody bring a holiday-themed dish.  As a graduate of Mr. Jefferson’s university, I went looking for recipes of dishes served at Monticello.  Here is a link to a recipe for Mr. Jefferson’s favorite ice cream.  I actually made sweet potato biscuits, another Jefferson favorite.  Any other dishes from founding fathers or mothers?

  1. The first cookbook I ever bought was one of old Virginia recipes that was sold in Williamsburg, Virginia in the 1950s. I couldn’t resist because there was a recipe in it for a sauce “to be carried about in the pocket”. It was simmered down, became hard and could be reconstituted later. Ah, early American ingenuity :-)
