Colbert would be a step in the right direction. Michael Bloomberg would also suit, and he wants to do continue in public service. I kid you not!
And please, please not George Weigel! Even worse, Bill Donohue, ug!
Colbert could be in. All the buzz about Tim Dolan of Milwaukee hasn’t taken into account this late-breaking scandal:

I don’t see why a distinguished layman with no more than one wife–as St. Paul requires–could not be picked. Remember St. Ambrose. (I am over age, sorry!)
First of all it is quite significant that ultra right wing rag Newsmax did the announcing. Amazing. Is this what it has come to?
I nominate General Petraeus to fill Spelly’s old fiefdom. First it will show that the Vatican openly acknowledges that it is into Empire. Secondly, the appointment will send a clear message that it means business. Third, Petraeus will not shy from putting a cap on bishop’s salary at 500 gs. Fourth, he will assure that the next time the pope comes to New York the proper taps will be played and the full military will show up. Fifth, and most important, the Annual Cardinal’s appeal will finally has some teeth in it as the Marines will collect the envelopes holding pledges and open them up on the spot when sufficient suspicion is aroused.
Could I ask: What does “HT” or “H/T” refer to?
Fr. Komonchak,
HT means “hat tip,” and it’s to acknowledge the source mentioned for bringing the item mentioned to your attention.
I am thrilled at the news! Who could doubt Stephen Colbert’s dynamism, not to mention spirituality, after viewing this video?
David, I had forgotten all about that. Thank you for the laughs. But for me it raises a difficult ontological question: is it Stephen Colbert, the actor (who demonstrated his zeal on the set of Strangers with Candy), or “Stephen Colbert,” the newsman character, who is being considered for the cathedra? The article linked above combines the two. Does that mean, if named, Colbert the actor would be expected to remain “in character” permanently — or at least till his 75th birthday?
I’m glad noone has mentioned Eliot Spitzer, who needs a job and is well versed in dealing with subversive wrong doing in more ways than one.
Then there’s Al D’Amato, a blast from the past, with apparently tight connections to the newest NY senator – what a powerhouse approach that could be.
But, if Catholic piety might be key, how about old Mario Cuomo, though the right to life group might be upset.
I think we need to cast about for more candidates as well.
Even as a Jew, I could only support Bloomberg for the post if Bishop Williamson were to be assigned as one of his subordinates…
… and to Prof. Kaveny,
I am not only honored that you would post my work, but can’t thank you enough for the ‘points’ your doing so scored with my Irish Catholic future in-laws.
Many thanks.
