  1. Here in Illinois we were expecting that Blago might belt out a Very Personal rendition of Harper Valley PTA in an attempt to bring down the House.

    But alas, no.

  2. Borrowing from the film ARTICLE 99 (only slightly modified :) —

“Crap really can float to the top!”

  3. This has to be some of the worst oratory ever recorded.

  4. He’s gone. The conviction squeaked through on a 59-0 vote. All hail, Governer Quinn!

  5. “Worst oratory”? Are you high? As a piece of rambling, self-serving obfuscation, this ranks right up there with the Checkers speech.

The Trib has the transcript for those with a penchant for rhetorical analysis: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-blagojevich-speech-transcript,0,6458687.story

  6. Not Blago’s speech–check the time stamp. The state senators’.

  7. So what is Quinn like? The bar is low, I know–but a real improvement, or more Hackville?

  8. Unlike Blago, he looks more like your dad than the nutty kid your little sister is dating, which in Illinois is probably enough.

  9. Quinn is widely considered a “goo-goo” (good government type). He’s generally thought to be too honest and decent to be really effective in Springfield. We’ll see.

  10. Trib’s piece on the new guv: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-quinn-scene-30jan30,0,3238951.story

  11. Oops, sorry Grant. I didn’t get to tune into much of the senate’s harrumphing except in after-clips. I’m sure there was plenty of bad oratory to go around, though.

  12. Quinn reminds me of the best governor NJ has had in years, Senate Majority Leader Richard Cody. Cody stepped in after McGrevvey’s “gay-American” coinage, and was respected by all. And was bigfooted by Corzine for it, and took it graciously. And then stepped in when Corzine nearly killed himself by riding without a seatbelt in a car going 9mph on the highway shoulder. And he did a great job. Accidental pols are often the best.

  13. Actually he was better than some homilists I have heard.
