The short story auteur of the moment — George Saunders — on his Catholicism. Fascinating.

I had no idea he was Catholic. I use his collection of short stories, “Persuasion Nation,” in my Mass Communication class sometimes. He has a new collection out, and I enjoyed his earlier novella, “The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil.”
He says he’s “reformed Catholic,” i.e., Buddhist.
I like the term “reformed Catholic” as referring in some way to Buddhist practice. The official Church would do well to explore just what it is in Buddhism that attracts so many Catholics, and others. Clearly, some Buddhist practices are in no way threatening to Catholic belief, and they can contribute greatly to individual prayer.
Must read some Saunders.
And….he grew up in Chicago.
