Three cheers for Emperor Henry II, the only canonized emperor. Here he is scolding the Romans:
When “Emperor Henry II came to Rome for his coronation as Holy Roman Emperor, he was surprised that they did not recite the [Nicene] creed. He was told that since Rome had never erred in matters of faith there was no need for the Romans to proclaim it at Mass. However, it was included in deference to the emperor and has pretty much remained ever since . . .”

Wonderful! This is medieval illumination as the Lord meant it to be. The best period of same, as far as I’m concerned.
(I won’t even ask about those oysters, and just assume they were part of a self-imposed Advent penance). Merry Christmas, and may the holiday something to heal your hands.
