Colbert on Religion: “One Nation Under Stephen”
The popular late-night comedy show, The Colbert Report, is on vacation this week, but the folks at colbertnation.com have offered us five new compilations online: highlight reels of some of Stephen Colbert’s satire and comedy on religion. Covered topics are Christianity / Catholicism, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Scientology (not a large religion, but the jokes come easy).

by Tim Luecke, Fordham senior -- HIRE HIM!
It’s hard not to conclude that Colbert and his staff were prepping for “The Cardinal and Colbert: Humor, Joy, and the Spiritual Life,” which is moderated by James Martin, S.J., tonight at Fordham (resource page with links and readings here). Although there is a media blackout on the event, which is at heart a Mission & Ministry event geared toward our students, we can’t really control the 2,988 smart phones that will be in the room. For now, though, you might enjoy these highlight reels from the past few years. Some of the jokes presume you’re a regular watcher of the show, but then again, why aren’t you?

“Although there is a media blackout on the event, which is at heart a Mission & Ministry event geared toward our students..”
Michael,
What is a Mission and Ministry Event? Sounds to me more ministry than event since a celebrity will attract otherwise unmotivated, indifferent students. But maybe some will “declare” themselves. As usual when these students graduate the talk will be of possible profitable careers. Not Mission and Ministry.
Here is our first take on this. http://www.commonwealmagazine.org/blog/?p=19696
I meant to write “more event than ministry” rather than vice versa.
Three men?
Perhaps Cdl Dolan’s specification in Hicksvillle of the “attractive, articulate, intelligent” laywoman of whom he spoke so highly should have been extended to include “and with a rollicking sense of humor”. Long ago, as I recall, you could find such female Catholics in that archdiocese if you were lucky. (One has hung around with me for 51 years.) Maybe next time.
