  1. Fascinating to see the interactions and questions….Bp. DeSoto noted that use of term “Ombamacare” is part of the partisan lexicona nd shuld not be used — good point! Our own ordinary has used that loosel and the partisanship has been transparent. John Garvey (CUA) pointd out that the ig change with law was attributable to 1990 deciosn that was suported by justices who were republican appointees.
Most interstingly, as a door-knobber, Cdl. Dolan called for a voice vote of support for the document that had been issued In March and all assented with non nay voices. So ot, all are on record as united in supprt — in a quick move that hardly was noticed… wow…

  2. Not sure who it is, but this bishop is talking about the real persecutions of the Church in the world….

  3. September 12, major conference on religious freedom at CUA

  4. David Pasinski

Whenever I see Cardinal Dolan furrow his brow and say or ask something in a somewhat of an off handed manner, as he did when he asked if HE, as a member of the administrative committee, for an voice vote to show the unity of the U.S. Bishops on this matter, I know he is playing politics, big time.

  5. When Bishop Soto chastised gently the cavalier use of the term Obamacare, I cheered. He has a Masters in Social Work. It do make a difference.

I like to see how a bishop’s degrees influence his thinking. I did get caught however. Cardinal Bevilacqua, who has degrees in canon and civil law, ordered significant information on pedophile priests to be shredded!

  6. My initial overal reaction is”Buisness as Usual.
-Religious Freedom PR that the Bishops (God Forbid) are not partisan or republican.–Support both nuns and Rome and try to soften protests(Cardinal O’Malley)
-Don’t make Bishops accountable in sex abuse, but keep fighting as hard as possible to avoid SOL legislation(Abp. Chaput0
What do you expect from this group but more PR for the usual views?
True believers will support and others will look on with the usual credul;ity.
    So it goes….

  7. Bob Nunz:

-Don’t make Bishops accountable in sex abuse, but keep fighting as hard as possible to avoid SOL legislation(Abp. Chaput0

Did I miss such an intervention by Archbishop Chaput at the Bishops’ meeting?

  8. Note to Vatican: after Bishop Bruskewitz goes to meet his maker one day, do not appoint Michael Sean Winters to lead the cause for canonization. :-)

  9. Surely the bishops were a bit uncomfortable yesterday when Bishop Shlemon Wardana, specifically blamed the persecution of the church in Iraq on the Iraq war. Were any of them, especially those who are part of the AD Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty squirming, when he described what REAL religious persecution is?

  10. “… a Broken Economy”??? Why did the bishops feel the need for a descriptive adjective here? No one is joyful about the state of the economy, but this leans into the partisan, imho.

  11. David –

It’s very easy to “lose” a book in a library. All you need to do is mis-shelve it. At the moment I have a young cousin helping me to put order in my books, and I had to caution her at length about putting them in the right place. One also gets into problems when one runs out of room on a shelf. Sometimes sections have to be split, and that can cause problems of mis-shelving too. And sometimes the category a book is initially shelved in makes sense at the times, but later a different place seems more logical, and one forgets what’s where and where to look. It’s really easy to lose books.

In the early middle ages there was actually one copy of Aristotle’s “Poetics”in an isolated English library. But nobody realized what it was or, perhaps, realized its value. No wonder his work on comedy was lost. I keep hoping somebody will find a copy. Nothing is known of its contents. :-(

  12. David Pasinski -

Following your argument, I gather that if you went to the hospital, you would prefer that the doctor would simply say appendix, or pancreas, or brain and leave out those “-itis” suffixes or words like “tumor” or “cancer” or “inflamed” as being too emotive? Have I got it right? And I am sure that if your loved one died, you wouldn’t dream of considering a lawsuit on the grounds that the gravity of the situation was not conveyed… I’m honestly not being sarcastic. I’m just trying to address the issue of logic and consistency. Changing the context lens can be very helpful in clarifying our mindset.

  13. Helen, see Laurie Goodstein in today’s NYT.
BTW, I think my whole take is that the Bishops would like to look good even if they are not being….

  14. Ann
I’m a bit dense on your meaning, but I remember loving “The name of the Rose” on that theme..

    Mary
I don’t hik that analogy applies if we look at all of the other bishops statments over the years. Surely I want descriptive adjectives when they comunicate something, but without seeing the text or argument, I’m not sure what is being communcated.

Perhpas I would have liked an episcopal stament “On the Terrible War in Iraq” (actually, anything substantive would have been welcome!) or “The Horrile Death Penalty”, but we didn’t see that. Or “The Blood-Sucking Defense Budget and the Poor”(despite Panetta’s pleas!), but I’m not holding my breath there either.

To entitle a document ” A Catholic Perspective on the State On Poverty and Economics in 2012″ seems to communicate enough to me and can be said in non-partisan ways.

  15. Big push today on religious freedom and its diminishment.
As was pointed out there, the Muslim world sees it differently because their first identity peg is the form of religion (thus Sjiities vs. Sunis, for example.)
In this pluralistic society , that kind of identity peg is not operative, and blaming “secular culture” for maintaining broad comunity is not such a feat.
But we’ll hav ea fortnight for freedom from our peerless leaders.
BYW, I though tin the Middle Ages, scholars did go around to monastic libraries to see what they could(and did) unearth,
    In nomine rosa. Amen.

  16. David P. –

No wonder you didn’t get my point. My email above was meant for the thread about the Origin texts. Somebody (not sure which David) made a comment about libraries “losing” books.

Sorry. Can’t figure out how it got here.

  17. Before we leave this thread, pne needs to ask about the leadership of Cardinal Dolan as the question of PR by USCCB is in play.
Not only the Milwaukee honesty question remains. but, in Ireland, his “report” on the Irish Collge in Rome has stirred controversy there as the Church there continues to come apart, depite visitations, etc.
In looking at Atlanta, I think the lesson that leadrship is grounded in better listening and less self congratulations has yet to be learned.
    As elsewhere, God help us…..

  19. The Irish Association of Catholic Priests (ACP) calls for Cdl. Timothy Dolan’s report on his Apostolic Visitation to the Irish College in Rome to be publicly repudiated by the Irish Archbishops who are trustees of the seminary and associated bishops. The ACP objects to the methodology and conclusions on the grounds of incompetence and unjustified consequent damage to priests’ reputations.

Cdl. Dolan stands by the report. (+ 6 links to related stories)
