The Blair Switch Project?

Posted by

Okay, it’s not a very original hedder, I’m sure. But it’s not easy to come up with something new on the worst-kept secret in Christendom: Tony Blair has swum the Tiber. His reception by Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor at Archbishop’s House was warm, though elsewhere it was somewhat hotter, as Amy Welborn reports.

Back in May, a London church source spoke of Blair’s faith in terms of a “baptism of desire.” That was when TB was still PM, and still understandably cagy about his intentions, given the religio-political ramifications in officially Anglican England. The source told the Times (of London): “He is an ecumenical Catholic…He is a liberal Catholic. In terms of his private life, he is a Roman Catholic.”

  1. One issue forever.

  2. Good news bring out the worst in people.

  3. Not forever, Bill. One issue until it’s over.

  4. Most seem to feel this is a merely practical move by Blair since his wife is Catholic. Now he won’t have to answer silly questions about receiving communion. Catholics are certainly making a big deal of this and it is triumphalism, no matter how you slice it.

It is quite presumptive to insist that you are closer to God when many glaring facts show that you have preferred reputation over the welfare of children. The proper attitude of Christians is to say: “Be merciful to me a sinner.” Unless we want to be cast outside which we are doing to everybody else.
