John Allen is interesting on the global Catholic contribution to movement against the death penalty. The list of countries voting against the U.N. resolution in opposition to the death penalty — U.S. China, Iran, Sudan and Singapore — won’t enhance your Christmas cheer.

If the U.S. voted for a moratorium on the death penalty, what would the implicaton be for the behavior of, say, Texas in this matter? I hasten to add that I am a native of Rhode Island, a state that abolished the death penalty in the 19th century.
