Here is the letter filed by Caplin & Drysdale with the Federal Election Commissionon behalf of Stephen Colbert, who is in D.C. testifying before that body today. It’s very funny-especially for a legal document.
I can only say that there are some very lucky summer associates at Caplin who get to be in on this one!
I hope they get to go to New York for a taping.

Yes, it’s funny. But the whole thing seems predicated on The Colbert Report’s treating fantasy as fact — as if Stephen-the-Character is real and needs real government approval for fantasy political actions, especially endorsements.
Will the FCC take this seriously? How could it?
Or does Stephen always act as Stephen-the-Character? Sometimes the real Stephen comes through loud and clear to me.
Stephen’s request was just approved 5-3 :-)
Oh, Stephen Colbert knows exactly what he is doing. He is proving that anybody can get a SuperPAC. His character is to satirize the Republicans. With this new ruling in his favor, he has fodder to last until the next election. Way to go, Stephen Colbert!
