Notre Dame Law graduate Matt Emerson now has a regular column at Patheos. As the title of the column suggests, he is deeply influenced by the Jesuit charism; he gave up legal practice in order to teach religion a Jesuit high school in California.
Check it out.
P.S. I have to say I smiled when I saw that Matt now has a column: He took courses with me (a Commonweal columnist) in law school, and took courses with Fr. John Kavanaugh, SJ (an America columnist) as an undergraduate. So he got an early double dose of exposure to the fascinations and frustrations of the genre!
Welcome, Matt!

The Chairman of Notre Dame’s Board of Trustees, Richard Notebaert, responded by noting that Martino was not aware that the groups she funded supported abortion rights.
How could anyone give over $25,000 to Emily’s List and not be aware what kind of an organization it is? From its opening web page, following HELP US ELECT PRO-CHOICE DEMOCRATIC WOMEN in huge type :
I couldn’t agree more that the religious right is overly focused on abortion, but I would certainly grant them the right to make noise over someone elected to the Notre Dame Board of Trustees who gives $5000-a-year contributions to Emily’s List.
In that column, he engages in some pretty athletic backing and forthing, especially in the concluding paragraphs. Funny he doesn’t mention forgiveness. Maybe – almost certainly – he – along with the CNS and Weigel and many others – knows more about what happened than he’s telling. Fair enough, but if so, he could at least allude to facts he’s leaving out.
