Catholic Theological Ethics and the World Church

Posted by

Last year at this time, I was getting ready to go to a marvelous conference in Trent, Italy, with moral theologians from around the globe.

The conversation that we had was remarkable.  I found the conference an invaluable, living reminder of the fact that the Catholic Church–and the questions that it deals with–are indeed, global in nature.

The participants were so enthusiastic about the new conversations enabled by the conference that we were insistent that that they not be allowed to wither on the vine–or more precisely, without the wine from the vine at the wonderful trattorias in Trento!

One fruit of the project is a website that serves as a clearinghouse and notice board for the ongoing work of expanding the community and the concerns of moral theologians to be truly global.

It’s open–check it out.

It’s extremely optimistic of them to trust Google with their translations. Don’t think I’ve ever seen that done before.

  2. Yes, the GoogleTranslator links all over the place seemed a little ironic given that its supposed to be a global forum and yet all non-English speakers will probably get the website in butchered translation if they go with that suggestion. Ah well… it’s a fine website and the world forum seems like a great idea for Catholic moral theology.

  3. Over at America these days, lots of interesting threads on matters Catholic, including PBS’s coverage of the Vatican AIDS conference -a topic of much interest morally.
America has a thread on the former head of Caritas’s departure speech – a terrific one IMO; today there’s news that Sr. Johnson has written back to the Bishops a 38 page letter as part of their “dialogue” invite and scoring them for lack of courtesy, not to mention complete misunderstanding.
(Footnote, maybe we can get Luke Timothy and Bernard to dialogue on that in a forthcoming issue.).
So here’s a good moral issue for theologians across the church today -mysogyny!
