Egypt–another interesting development, actually more than one

Politico has this analysis of U.S. neocons take on Egypt: “As Israeli leaders worriedly eye the protests and street battles in neighboring Egypt, they’ve been dismayed to find that the neoconservatives and hawkish Democrats who are usually their most reliable American advocates are cheering for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s fall.”

Interesting observations on the Mubarak “supporters” from Ha’aretz: ”The big question is who the thousands of Mubarak supporters are. Al Jazeera alleged they were plainclothes security people tasked with dispersing the huge demonstration in the square, especially in view of the reduced number of demonstrators on Wednesday. Other sources also suggested police detectives and security forces. But apart from undercover security men, who were the others? For example, Egypt’s state television channel reported that the camel riders were laborers from the area around the Pyramids protesting the damage to their livelihood.”

And this at TPM. “Hubris”

And Timothy Garton Ash does the 1989 comparison

  1. It is astonishing that all of these people could become anti-Semitic all at once, isn’t it?

  2. Amazing. Do you think it’s flouride in the water?
E.J. Dionne has some other explanations in the link above.

  3. Anti-Semitism has been around for two-thousand years.The predominant 21st century version is anti-Arab.

  4. Mubarak says he would leave now, bu tthere’d be chaos.
Of course, his supporters caused(are causing) any chaos.
Should Obama call him for 30 minutes again???????

  5. Molly’s post suggest that Mubarak may be having a hard time finding a place to go. Pat Lang has a post saying that the Saudi’s have offered him a spot–not quite as nice as London.

But no, I don’t think Obama should call him again. Let the Egyptians work this out.

  6. In fact, mubarak says Obama’s a good man but doesn’t understand Egypt. I think Mubarak just doesn’t know how to let go and is playing a double game

  7. Is it possible that power has already passed to the military leaders and they’re working with our Pentagon to find him a place to go. Any suggestions? Maybe Israel?

  8. I’m glad the Ash has finally called Europe’s hand on this. They have a tendency to sit back, reap whatever rewards they can, and contribute minimally to problem resolution.

  9. Jimmy Mac ==

    What you said.

  10. You’ve all missed the REAL story, which only Glenn Beck has — ACORN did it:

  11. I remember when Glenn Beck was sane.

  12. “ACORN did it”. At least he’s not blaming Frances Fox Piven for Egypt.

  13. Mubarak refuses to go (at least until something’s worked ou t behind the scenes?)

  14. Great carton at Politcs daily:
“Glenn Beck and His Tower of Babble.”
