Tops!

The Jewish Journal has named the top ten Jews of the year and included a Catholic on their list. Guess who? Don’t peek until after you’ve named a name. Number 11 is….

  1. A wonderful list of wonderful people. (I didn’t guess #11, but I agree with their choice.)

(Why doesn’t dotCommonweal do a list of the Top Ten Catholics of the year?)

  2. Drake?! Oy.

  3. It seems to me if they can put Eric Cantor on the list, there’s no reason for them to have left off Bernie Madoff.

  4. Perhaps, there still being many more Catholics than Jews, it would require more extensive rumination to pick Top Ten Catholics.

  5. And what does it mean that Rahm Emanuel didn’t make the cut?

  6. Rahm? It means he was in a subsidiary, not top, position this year. Next year he’ll make it.

  7. Colbert for number one Catholic.

  8. I’ve been saying that Numero 11 is something of a saint. And his friend is one splendid human being :-)

I notice that many of the winners are really Jewish prophets — telling truth to power. Would that more Catholics had that virtue.

  9. Not sure about some of their picks.

I would have thought Richard Goldstone the South African lawyer who put law above all exemplifies those virtues.

Plus it seems kind of tilted leftward given the influence of Jewish intellectuals in the neo-con movment.

  10. Agree, Bob.

Imho, the list should also include Sr. Carol Keehan, DC. Sr. Margaret McBride, RSM, Jason Berry, and Thomas P. Doyle.

  11. Maybe Richard Goldstone could be counted as an honorary Catholic.

  12. a Catholic choice in next years list should include Jerry Brown.. his Governoral inauguration will be on the Capitol lawn featuring bottled water, hot dogs with onions and a small bag of chips..less is more.

  13. chips??? low sodium??

  14. Don’t agree at all that Colbert is the number one Catholic. By any means. Nor do I doubt that there are tons of Catholics who equal or better the list. Having said that I do not agree with canonizing anyone dead or alive. We are who we are by the grace of God and we are judged by Matthew 25. Judging is a dangerous game for good or bad. That does not mean we can not criticize or praise actions.

  15. Margaret you forgot to mention hot dogs. They are loaded with even more sodium, fat, and additives that nobody can pronounce!

(and of course the ketchup loaded with sugar)

And the bottled water. The plastic alone is causing a huge problem.

So that leaves us with the onions. Why am I getting the sneaking suspicion they are going to be deep fried.

  16. There are certainly some questions about Barbara Picower who is on the list. This shows why lists are not a good idea.

  17. George D: Of course, I didn’t expect that anyone in California would eat the hot dogs or use the ketchup (or mustard!). But you can see how the chips (just one) might be tempting.

  18. Helen Thomas is out in the cold. She pays the penalty of speaking the truth to the world.

  19. SMW,

Remember. The wife is the last to know.

  20. Yes, Bill, lists that assign or imply merit are not a good idea, but people need to keep busy.

  21. NCR named a Person of the Year for the first time — and it’s not Colbert!

  22. Actually, I agree with NCR on Carol Keehan as Catholic person of the year – maybe this should also be appended to (the never ending) Olmstead thread below.

  23. I know there’s controversy about his handling of the poor freshman’s suicide, but I think the President of Nortre Dame deserves a big award for holding fast over honoring President Obama.

(But, please, let’s not start that argument again!)

  24. “Actually, I agree with NCR on Carol Keehan as Catholic person of the year”

    http://wdtprs.com/blog/2010/12/ncrs-very-first-person-of-the-year-sr-carol-keehan/
“…NCR honors Sr. Keehan because this year she did more than anyone else to change the perception that Catholics must oppose abortion…Quite a legacy.”

  25. To take one small part of the NCR piece underscores why the Olmstead thread goes on and on.
The continuing division that wil surelu carry on in the new year between Defendders of the Faith (DOTFs from now on) and the views of broader catholicism will persist, with much tension on issues of episcopal authority and the connection of our hierachy to the right to life movement.
And, connection in some minds to its more extreme elements.
Still, happy New Year to all .
But a special happy New Year to the folks at Commonweal who keep the conversation going.

  26. MOS: Californians only eat Kosher franks! Ketchup has been dignified as a bona fide vegetable by a former president – such an imprimatur! I guess that means that mustard must at least be a kissin’ cousin of catsup.

Happy 2011 to one and all.
