Arthur J. Schmitt Chair of Catholic Studies

The University of Illinois at Chicago seeks candidates for the Chair of Catholic Studies endowed by the Arthur J. Schmitt Foundation. Candidates must have a distinguished scholarly record and be eligible for appointment at the rank of Professor in the departments of English, Gender and Women’s Studies program, Germanic Studies, History, Latin American and Latino Studies, or Sociology. Specialties may include the church as an institution and its relationship to other societal institutions; early Catholic thought; history and role of the Catholic church and missions in the U.S., Latin America or Africa; the place of women, gender, and values in the Catholic Church; Catholicism in Central Europe, or literature and culture of Catholicism. The Schmitt Professor will take the lead in developing undergraduate and graduate curricula in Catholic Studies by providing students with a broad, introductory course as well as advanced courses. The curriculum may include study of the tradition of Roman Catholic thought and doctrine, the history of the Catholic Church and its liturgy, and the cultural and social dimensions of Catholic experience. The Schmitt Professor will have the opportunity to work with colleagues interested in Catholic Studies. Minimum requirements: an earned doctorate in a relevant field of the Liberal Arts or the equivalent, a distinguished record of scholarly publications in the candidate’s discipline relevant to Catholic Studies, and evidence of effective teaching at the college or university level. Salary and research support are open and competitive. The position begins in fall, 2010, subject to final budget approval. As a member of the Campus Ministry Service and Social Justice Team, the minister will coordinate the Week- Long Service Break Program to include recruitment, selection, education, and training for approximately 90 student leaders as well as securing and communication with service site affiliates, fundraising, and collaboration with most colleges within Villanova University, except for Arts & Sciences, to assist with service learning experiences. A Masters Degree in Theology/Pastoral Ministry or equivalent with experience in higher education required; experience with Principles of Catholic Social Teaching and Mission of Roman Catholic Higher Education in the Augustinian Tradition.
